Local Knowledge Pool
One of our library’s responsibilities, with the purpose of aiming at completeness, is to collect information and other works in concern the city of Győr, and the creations of other authors who were born in the city or lived there for a longer period.
The separate collection developed and recovered properly this way is an extremely copious information source for those who wish to know more about the city, its history, industry, institutions, arts and crafts, and celebrities, etc.
The library’s information personnel will assist our readers/users about how to use the collection and how to collect information.
Where is the Local Knowledge Pool?
The Local Knowledge Pool of our library is located at the Adult Readers’ Service of the Central Library. The most important manuals, which provide basic information with those interested, are purchased by all of the library’s branch libraries and the Children’s Library as well.
What is in the Local Knowledge Pool?
The geographical boundaries of the collection
The territory within the prevailing administrative boundaries of the city of Győr has been considered to be the foundation of the collection of the Local Knowledge Pool. However, all fundamental and informative ancillary volumes, manuals, and summarizing monographs about the entire county and its regions have also been purchased.
The chronological boundaries of the collection
Information on the past, present and future are equally collected. It is our library’s endeavour to develop a current and flawless collection of the materials being published these days.
The thematic boundaries of the collection
The collection of the Local Knowledge Pool is a comprehensive and complex information archives, thence all documents of all sciences that are connected to the city of Győr have been collected. The Galgóczi Erzsébet City Library has been privileged, and all information and documents concerning the people connected with the city of Győr and in respect to the local authors have been treated with high priority. All those are considered to be local authors who were born is the city of Győr and/or part of their creative activity is connected to the city (activities connected only to Győr have been taken into account).
The boundaries of the collection designated by document types
Books: documents concerning Győr, and the full range of the local authors’ works (nationally published study books as well). Only those of the locally printed products are collected that represent at least partly the outcome of any work completed in the field of local knowledge.
Periodicals e.g.: newspapers, periodicals, bulletins, reports, annual reports, almanacs, etc.): full range of the periodical volumes published in the city of Győr.
Small prints (e.g.: catalogues, flyers, invitations, announcements, etc.): selected small prints concerning local relations from all spheres of life, and small prints concerning the local library. Home-made materials are also collected.
Manuscripts, theses, research reports, minutes of general meetings, local legal materials: as regards manuscripts, theses, and research reports, all works that are at least partly connected to the local relations have been collected, and furthermore the full range of the minutes of general meetings and local legal materials have been collected.
Media search: all information connected to local knowledge published in national newspapers and in "Kisalföld" (Little Hungarian Plain), a locally distributed newspaper.
Maps: important maps portraying the city of Győr and the entire county.
Still images: postcards, photos, slides, and scripts with a content connected to local relations.
Audio documents: CDs, audio books.

Own publications in the local knowledge collection
Particular data and/or information are frequently found to be dispersed in the documents that compose the Local Knowledge Pool. The retrieval of these data and information is very difficult. Capacitated by the idea of recapitulating the knowledge identified in the local knowledge volumes, our library undertook to publish local knowledge works that have a comprehensive nature.
The local knowledge pool volumes that have been considered as the most important ones published by our library are the following:

Documents that compose the Local Knowledge Pool have been listed in the computer assisted catalogue that archives the library stock.
The library’s local knowledge catalogues and databases serve to satisfy special searching demands and deeper retrieval.

How to use the Local Knowledge Pool
The first copies of the local knowledge books are stored in separate collections; these are available for on-site use only, thus they are signed with a red stripe. The second copies are placed in the same collection, but are signed with a blue stripe and are available for lending. The term of book lending is one (1) week that cannot be prolonged. Possible further copies are placed among the books for free use.
The preceding rules concern the maps in the collection. Pieces signed with a red stripe in the collection, as well as the bound periodicals can be lent for the weekend. For more information about this, please read our "Terms of use".
CDs, VHS cassettes, and DVDs of local knowledge pool are available in the MEDIA ARCHIVES. These data carriers can be borrowed according to the rules that apply to the Media Archives.
